10 Rules to Help You Become a Confident and Successful Potter
Hi can you please tell me how long I have to let my glaze dry before I can fire it thank you and I like your videos
Thank you! Good question. I wait at least 4 hours to make sure the glaze is dry in the pores of the bisqued clay. Most of the time I wait overnight because of my firing schedule. Happy glazing 😊
You will forever be my favourite when explaining. You have no idea how much I'm learning from you and how much you solve my doubts (since I'm learning on my own I have quite a few haha). I wonder, will the pencil burn off if it was already glazed over the underglaze? Thank you, Marie!
WOW! Thank you Elivean. I'm happy to hear that! Good question. Yes, it will because of the high temperature you fire to. Happy Glazing. 💖
Him my name is Rita. I relly appreciate your video on brush glazing
Glad it was helpful! Thank you Rita.
Please pardon my beginners question but why do you do two coats of the first glaze? To ensure coverage? I understand the 2nd glaze is an accent glaze.
That is a good question. Yes you are right. Glaze has to be thick. You want the thickness of a t shirt or fingernail to create a smooth glass like finish. 😊
13:05 Can’t wait to see the bubble glaze after it’s finished
I love bubble glazing. Did you see my wavy bowl glazing? I bubble glazed one of the bowls. Here is the link for you. ruclips.net/video/nOoxyHG4J9c/видео.html 💖
What a nice demeanor you have! I love that you have such a well assembled studio🤩 and you demonstrate the technique so lovely ❤️
Thank you so much! 😊
It's always amazed me how I have absolutely no problem getting good results on a wood lathe or a spinning wheel but have so much problem with a pottery wheel. I will be trying these hints and hopefully will make a breakthrough.
That was the one thing I struggled with the most. Here is another video that may help ruclips.net/video/GKS5GIb2j84/видео.html 😊
Did you high fire the lid and pot separately?
Good question. Yes I did. 😊
Thank you for the videos. Are so he LP ful. My question is how can I Get a similar results working in low temperature oven
You are most welcome. The good news is the low fire glazes have advanced a lot over the years and are more similar to mid fire glazes . For example: Because there is more flux added to the glaze it can flow at a lower temperature. So If you are looking for a drippy low fire glaze, look for the glazes that say things like flow or float. 😊
Sehr gut und extrem sympathisch erklärt. Danke vielmals !!! 🧡
Du bist herzlich Willkommen
Thank you for covering this subject. My underglaze bottles have been developing mold. Any tips on ways to avoid it?
I have had that happen to my speedball underglaze and took it because it happened right away. Since then speedball has changed there recipe. I use spectrum a lot. I have heard to use a touch of vinegar but the underglaze may turn gritty. I will be talking with Amaco soon. Would you like me to ask them and get back to you?
@@PotteryCrafters Thanks for a quick response, Marie. Yes please, do ask Amaco. I’ve seen this happening to some of my Velvet colours. I’ve been painstakingly removing the moldy layer. I’m in India and due to the high temp in my region (or another reason), Amaco velvets dry up quickly but they remain usable and are more dependable in their fired colour output than locally made underglazes. I don’t have access to other western brands in India. While Velvet Red-Orange-Blue colours remain moist, they develop mold.
Ok I will be talking to her in the next few days. 😊
Hi. I usually talk to Cara from Amaco directly but have not gotten through with her. So I emailed her. I'm still waiting for a reply. They most be very busy or short on help.
@@PotteryCrafters Marie, I had also emailed Amaco’s cust care and got a response that the underglaze can be used despite the mold without affecting its fired colour…
Hi there, I just followed your video to make colored slip with black mason stain. Easy. However, you say in your video that 2 T mason stain = 1 ounce. I weighed AND used a Tablespoon and when I put the first T in, it weighed 1 ounce already. Should I have gone with 2T or 1 oz? I went with the weight measurement but could always add another spoonful. I looked elsewhere and people say it depends on the color you're using. Thoughts?
Yes you are right. The amount does depend on the color you want to achieve. It's always good to measure out the clay and stain so you can create the same color shade if you want. Making black clay. That sounds cool! 😊
Can you do this onto bisque ?
Yes I have transferred on to bisqueware. Make sure the transfer paper is wet and give the pencil marks time to transfer onto the bisqueware
Thanks😊
Thank you too 😊
Love how you take your time explaining. You make it so easy to follow ❤
I was thinking the same thing. I didn't want to run through it too fast. Thank you so much!😊
You're the best! Thanks :o)
You're welcome Wendy! I'm glad it was helpful 💖
How i wish you teach me more about glazing, we do pottery but have no knowledge on glazing apart from bisque/first firing
These videos may help ruclips.net/video/2OOWC_rgJNo/видео.html ruclips.net/video/sjL6JN88Kzc/видео.html and this post potterycrafters.com/how-to-choose-pottery-glaze/ hope these help to start with. 💖
GREAT video, Marie, as always! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!
You are so welcome MaryJean 💖 Glad it was helpful!
Well done. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you too 💖
Thank you so much for all this information!! I am new to underglazes, and this clarified a lot of the confusion I had!! 😊
You are so welcome. That is great to hear! 😊
I'm glad to see a new video from you. I enjoy your work and learn a lot. Thanks
So nice of you! Thank you 😊
Love this. Been experimenting with underglazes alot and loving them. However, one thing I keep running into is not enough color saturation or consistent coverage. It'll look too washy after firing, despite what appears as consistent coverage prior to firing. What can this be attributed to?
Thank you so much. I hope I can help. What temperature do you fire to? And at what stage do you apply your underglaze?
@@PotteryCrafters I’m taking a ceramics class at a community Arts Center, and they fire at Cone 6. Leather Hard Stage
Your underglaze should be more vibrant because it's fired to cone 6 and not 06. I know low fire is not as vibrant. Sorry I didn't ask this question earlier. What underglaze brand are you using?
@@PotteryCrafters It’s probably 06. Must have misspoke. Amaco underglaze. Issue is likely twofold: Adding a bit too much water to it to get a desired application consistency so it flows easier off the brush; and, perhaps not allowing enough dry time between coats, such that adding the next coat too soon results in degrading (subtracting from) the initial coat which hasn’t adhered enough to the leather hard piece. May have answered my own question. Think I’ll stick to under glazing on bisque ware, which seems to give me more reliable results. Any last word?
Very good! Yes, there are different variables involved in glazing. I was also thinking of making sure you don't apply the clear glaze too thick. Amaco is a good underglaze! Happy glazing 😊
I keep trying. I can’t get my mug any taller than 4 1/2”. They twist or weak areas. Phooey I’ve gone through 50lbs of laguna clay. I can’t wait to try your favorite clay. Maybe there’s hope. lol thank you for all you do
Yes this is my favorite - Amaco A-Mix #11 Stoneware geni.us/hZeg You can also wedge some vinegar in the clay to improve the plasticity of the clay. 😊
Thanks for your video. You're so calming :) What cone do you bisque the cookies to with cone 10 clay? I was thinking may 04, but maybe it should be 06? How do you know?
Thank you so much! Yes you are right cone 04. I just use cone 10 clay because the cookies last longer.
Thank you 💖
Could you also just simply put the wet clay that is in the pillowcase directly on top of the rack that is on top of the 5 gallon bucket? Or, does it need to be hanging like you have it hung from the rack?
Thank you for the suggestion. Yes I think that would also be a good less messy way of doing it. 😊
You made a point to talk about how important it is to measure, but if you ever mentioned how much water, I completely missed it.
That is an excellent question. You will need to keep track of the amount you use because the amount of water will be determined by how thick you want your slip to be. Some potters like it a little thicker then others depending on the decorating technique. You will want 10oz. of slip to 1 or 2 tablespoons of stain depending on the shade of color you want to produce. 😊
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you so much. What an exemplary teacher you are. I am considering adopting an entire ceramic studio and all supplies. My knowledge is limited. I’m a little “scared”. Your voice and demeanor calms me. I’ll be learning so much from my subscription to your site. You are precious. ❤thank you.
You are most welcome! Here is a video on all you need to get started at home ruclips.net/video/QAdchhoJ-QE/видео.html and a post to go with it potterycrafters.com/making-pottery-at-home/ This is a more advanced studio set up. ruclips.net/video/qvsoGw7q7mM/видео.html Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery 😊
Thanks for sharing this! Would it work to pour or dip the first layer and brush on the second glaze only partially where I want it? :) that would safe me so much time 😊
Yes you can. I have done that. (poured the top half and brushed the lower half with a coat or two. Except you don't want to brush where you poured because you will then apply too much glaze and it may drip like the rim dip. Unless it is a stable glaze which you may get pinholes. 😊 Happy glazing
Love all your videos
Thank you Anne 😊
Sure helpful as I’m considering setting up a work area.
That is great! Here is a video on just the basics you need to get started ruclips.net/video/QAdchhoJ-QE/видео.html And here is a post on it. potterycrafters.com/making-pottery-at-home/

😢 which clay mask on school
I would like to help but I don't know what a (clay mask on school) is. Do you mean a dust mask for clay dust?
I like to make plates, but sometimes they are brittle when dry and break easily. Am I doing something wrong?
I think it is the clay you are using. I would try a different clay body. Clay with Grog does help to prevent cracks. 😊
Amazing videos, so informative and well organised! Thank you so much! I had a negative experience recently with a studio teacher being extremely negative about people learning pottery, and seeing your videos and positive attitude has lifted my spirit back up. Thank you!
You are most welcome Alisa. Thanks for sharing! I think you will like this video ruclips.net/video/7TcbmARt-TI/видео.html
thank you so much for this video! I am researching pottery for a writing project and new to ceramics. For this writing project, I was wondering how it might work to do terracotta pottery, with wood firing, and raku? Is it only feasible with an electric or gas kiln? thank you, hard to answer this question with my research so far!
Yes you can. I think Andy Ward's videos will help. Here is the link for you. www.youtube.com/@AncientPottery

Love this video
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for this video Marie. Your pleasant voice, calm manner and the fact that you don't waffle and say only the essential things are very helpful to the student potter.
You are so welcome 😊 That is great to hear!
I’m brand new to pottery, having taken seven whole classes so far, but I love it. My teacher let me buy a bag of clay to play with at home, so I’ve bought a couple of pieces of drywall (which I’m thinking now is the wrong thing for wedging, so I’ll be heading back to Lowe’s for a piece of wood and some clamps), and a beginner tool set. My first attempt at wedging at home was not exactly successful. Then I found your video. I’ll keep practicing the ram’s head and the spiral styles, but that slamming technique is right at my expertise level. Thank you!
That's great to hear. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. here is link to surfaces for you wedge and handbuild on potterycrafters.com/best-surfaces-for-hand-building/ 💖
How do you keep your bowls from sliding on your wheel?
Good question. I don't press down hard with my brush. 😊
Do you not finish the bottoms?
Yes I did but I forgot to show that part because I was focusing on showing the way the glazes flows. I will try to remember in my future videos 😊
How do let these items dry if you dip?
Good question. I hold them upside-down for at least a few minutes until they stop dripping, then flip them over.
Beautiful! Thank you
Glad you like them! 😊
looks like you might need some safety glasses 🥽 too. thank you for showing how to do this!
Yes, thanks. I tried breaking up the clay in the pillow case but I couldn't see the chucks of clay. 😀You can leave the big chucks. It will just take a little longer to soften. 😁
great tips. however, i had to watch at 1.5x.
Thank you Sara. Glad it helped 😊
Do you have a video on how to make an urn ?
No, but I was thinking about it. For a pet or person?
Both ?
Nice tutorial! Trying to find a great blue for my terra cotta, but I do love the third one. Thanks for the suggestions. Stay muddy.
You are so welcome! I think the Attic Blue and Textured Turquoise look nice on terra cotta. also, the Indigo float will give you a little darker, more vibrant blue. 😊
